In Memoriam: Philippa Hetherington

We have been reached by the sad news that Dr. Philippa Hetherington has passed away after a long battle with cancer. Philippa was awarded a Visiting Fellowship at IRES 2019, but could not come due to her illness. She was one of her generation's most promising researchers of imperial Russia and the early Soviet Union.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathy is with her family and friends today. Rest in peace dear Philippa. Forever remembered, forever missed.

On 24 February 2022, the armed forces of the Russian Federation launched an invasion of Ukraine that have already caused the unprecedented destruction of human lifes and safety, economic livelihood, unique cultural heritage, and the natural environment.

IRES will launch a project where Ukrainian scholars are invited to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas about the war. The preliminary title is War Chronicle: The Ukrainian Witness.

On 24 February 2022, the armed forces of the Russian Federation launched an invasion of Ukraine, a war of aggression that continues Russia’s illegal military breaches of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territorial integrity. For the first time since the Cold War, a nuclear superpower has threatened to use its arsenal in a first-strike capacity. This war is a threat to the sovereignty and self-determination of Ukraine and its people; to the OSCE and UN-backed security system established in Europe to prevent such conflicts; and to the world through the spectre of nuclear annihilation.

Onsdagen den 28 november hölls det estlandssvenska seminariet i arkivlokalerna på Institutet för språk och folkminnen. En mycket stor grupp hade slutit upp för att lyssna till forskningsarkivarierna Annika Karlholm och Eva Thelin som presenterade den estlandssvenska undersökningen och de estlandssvenska samlingarna som finns där. Vi fick lyssna till inspelningar och titta på uppteckningar av olika slag. Vi fick också se prov på de rika samlingar av illustrationer av olika slag som finns i arkivet.

This week on April 20-21 UCRS arranged an international symposium "The Gulag in Writings of Solzhenitsyn and Shalamov: Fact, Document, Fiction". This symposium brought together Shalamov and Solzhenitsyn scholars in order to address a number of key themes and concepts such as fiction and fact, document and trace, memory, evidence, and authenticity.

In April 1685, King Charles XI of Sweden received a polar bear as a gift from the only 13-year old Tsar Peter I of Russia. In return, as diplomatic relations continued to develop, the Swedish king sent a white and brown fighting dog called Turck (‘Turk’) to the young Tsar.

From September 26-28 the International Office at Uppsala University and the Uppsala Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies host the NIZAMI project meeting in Uppsala. The topics to be discussed are internationalization, quality standards and structuring doctoral education. UCRS researcher Dr. Sofie Bedford takes part in the workshop as a member of Uppsala’s group of experts and advisors for Nizami.
